Your Environment
We come into contact with it every minute of the day, the land we use, the air we breathe and the water we drink. What are some of the environmental health issues we should be aware of and how do I make a difference in my daily activities? This section of the website will provide practical steps for leading a healthier way of life not only for ourselves, but also for our environment.
As a first step, we can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by making small changes in our home setting. The Environmental Protection Agency recommends the following:
- Change five lights – replace conventional bulbs with energy star bulbs
- Look for ENERGY STAR qualified products – including electronics, lighting and appliances
- Heat and cool smartly – choose high efficiency equipment and change filters
- Seal and insulate your home – seal and insulate ducts in attics and crawlspaces and choose windows with an Energy Star rating
- Use green power - environmentally friendly electricity that is generated from renewable energy sources such as wind and the sun
- Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle – recycle your paper products and purchase products made from recycled materials
- Be green in your yard – check out the Green Resources section of this site to learn more about mowing, gardens and composting
- Use water efficiently – repair all toilet and faucet leaks, turn off the water while shaving or brushing your teeth and look for products with EPA’s WaterSense label
- Spread the Word – tell family and friends energy efficiency is good for you and the environment
