Consumer Products
Consumer products include cosmetics, personal care products, cleaning products, lawn and garden, electronics and home furnishings/repair. Recently, there has been public concern over the chemicals that are put into these products since they have not been properly tested for safety. Many scientific studies have shown that some of the chemicals contained in consumer products such as fragrance, parabens and DMDM hydantoin can cause symptoms ranging from allergic reactions, skin irritation, developmental defects, to cancer.
Endocrine Disruptors
Endocrine disruptors are a substance that acts like a hormone or interferes with natural hormones. They can interfere with natural processes and cause adverse reproductive, developmental and neurological effects. For example, shampoo, conditioner, and body lotion may contain parabens, which are estrogen mimics that are suspected to disrupt normal hormone function.
Other endocrine disruptors include: BPA, phthalates, flame retardants (PBDEs), DDT, dioxins and PCBs.
